Getting Started with MusicZen

January 23, 2026 MusicZen Team

Welcome to MusicZen! This guide will help you get started organizing your music collection — MP3, FLAC, M4P, OGG, WAV, AIFF, AAC, and ALAC are all supported.

Installation

  1. Download MusicZen for your platform (Windows, macOS, or Linux)
  2. Run the installer
  3. Launch the application

Your First Organization Task

Step 1: Select Your Music Folder

Click the “Browse” button to select the folder containing your music files. MusicZen will scan this directory and all subdirectories.

Step 2: Choose Your Organization Structure

MusicZen Basic comes with six pre-defined directory structures to keep your library consistent:

  • Artist → Album
  • Year → Artist → Album
  • Artist → Year
  • Genre → Year → Artist → Album
  • Genre → Artist → Album
  • Artist → Year → Album

Files are renamed [track#] - [song title].[extension] for every structure except Artist → Year, where they’re renamed [Album] - [track#] - [song title].[extension] — since a single year folder can hold tracks from multiple albums.

Step 3: Organize

Click “Organize” and MusicZen will rename and move your files into the directory structure you selected.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do a trial run first - MusicZen doesn’t show a preview before organizing, so run it on a small folder first to confirm you get the output you want before pointing it at your full library.
  • Ensure your MP3 files have proper ID3 tags - MusicZen reads the metadata from your files. If your tags need cleaning up first, Mp3tag (Mac/Windows) and Kid3 (Linux) are both free tools that work well.
  • Duplicates are handled automatically - if a file with matching tags already exists at the destination, MusicZen compares bit rate, duration, and file size, and keeps the better copy.
  • Backup your music before organizing large collections.

Next Steps

Want more control over how your files get organized? The Pro version — currently in development — adds custom directory and file name structures, duplicate handling, and detailed activity logs. See what’s coming in Pro and how to lock in a Founder License.

Happy organizing!
